Texture, texture, and more texture

Digital illustration and texture

28.7._interior

I have been reworking quite a few old illustrations. Mainly by adding lots and lots of different textures, such as different kinds of scanned paper, even sand-paper. Also various other materials, such as eg lino cut into – creates very heavy texture.

Quick and easy way to create interesting textures

Another good and quick way to create interesting textures on paper is to rub charcoal on paper over wood, wallpaper or any other textured surface you can find – this is an old technique used by the Surrealist, particularly artists such as Max Ernst to great extent. Here’s a board of ‘frottage’ on Pinterest

Here are some examples of my own ‘frottage’…Charcoal_web

Or, another quick way would be to download a ready-made pack of textures – but bah, that’s so boring and unoriginal when there’s a world full of interesting surfaces waiting to be created…
