After reading an article on in Adobe’s ‘Create’ mag about Brian Miller’s illustrations and his creative process, I decided to try some of the tips he mentioned. Brian starts with rather elaborate sketches, working on shapes and light/dark values before adding colour to selected areas. I think it’s a very sensible approach that I might try using in my own process – it’s so easy to get lost in a myriad of colours, especially when working digitally.
Sketching is also what I need to get back, do it more regularly, practice hand – without practice my hands get really clumsy and unsure. So it’s ‘back to the drawing board’.
Using tiny thumbnails sketches, I decide more contrast is needed so the current version looks like this
